Natural tone, real dynamics

Jazz Mixing and Mastering

Mixing and mastering for jazz, from piano trios and quartets to big bands, vocal jazz and jazz fusion. We keep the sound natural and the dynamics alive, so it feels like the band is playing in the room.

The sound

Mixing and mastering for Jazz

Jazz is about musicians listening to each other. A good jazz mix doesn't sound mixed at all: it sounds like you are sitting in front of the band. That means respecting the dynamics of the performance, keeping the natural tone of the instruments and using the room sound rather than fighting it. We balance upright bass, piano, drums, horns and vocals so every solo can be followed, without squashing the quiet moments or over-brightening the cymbals. Whether you recorded a live session in one room or built a modern jazz-fusion track part by part, we give it warmth, depth and clarity.

Our approach

Built around your sound

01

Upright bass and piano with weight

Upright bass and piano carry the harmony. We give the bass definition so every walking line is heard, and keep the piano full and natural across its whole range.

02

Drums and cymbals that breathe

Jazz drums are played with touch. We keep brush work, ride patterns and the snap of the snare natural, and avoid the heavy compression that would flatten the feel.

03

Room sound and solo balance

Overheads and room mics hold a live session together. We use them to create depth, then gently ride levels so each soloist stands forward without the band disappearing.

Questions

Jazz mixing and mastering FAQ

Will you compress my jazz recording heavily?

No. Jazz depends on dynamics, so we use only light, transparent control where it helps. The quiet passages stay quiet and the climaxes still lift.

Our band recorded live with a lot of bleed between mics. Is that a problem?

Not usually. Bleed is part of the sound of a live jazz session. We work with it, align the microphones where needed and use it to build a natural sense of space.

How loud should a jazz master be?

Quieter than most pop or hip-hop. We master jazz to a level that keeps its dynamics and natural tone, which also sounds better after streaming platforms adjust the volume.
