Techno works differently from most dance music. There is often no big drop: instead, a track holds the dance floor by repeating, evolving slowly and building tension over six, eight or ten minutes. The kick and the rumble underneath it carry the whole record, so they have to be powerful, controlled and perfectly locked together. Around them, small changes in percussion, filters and textures keep the listener hooked. We mix with that in mind, protecting the groove, keeping every layer clear in a dense, repetitive arrangement and making sure the energy grows in the right places. My techno tracks are 7 to 10 minutes long. Is that a problem?
Not at all. Long, DJ-friendly arrangements are normal for techno. We mix and master the full length and check that the energy holds up from the intro to the outro.
How do you get a big kick and rumble without mud?
We treat the kick and the rumble as a pair, giving each its own part of the low end and controlling their decay, so the bottom end is heavy but every kick still punches through.
Do you master techno for vinyl as well as digital?
We prepare masters for digital release and streaming as standard. If you are pressing vinyl, tell us before we start, because vinyl needs extra care with low end and stereo width.
